Musical Picks

Musicsym.wmf (1776 bytes)While in Panama I discovered some excellent Latin rock.  And living in NYC, I am exposed to all kinds of world fusion music.  Best of all, all bands include New York in their tour schedules, and I've been able to see some favorites as well as discover some new bands.  Check the column to the right for my latest musical picks and discoveries.

From the Archives

At the 2001 NOLA JazzFest, I first heard a band that introduced me to a whole new genre of music.  The band is Galactic, and the best way I can describe them is acid jazz/funk/rock/retro/blues - you get the idea. I've recently heard the genre referred to as "Groove Rock". Other bands I've come to know and enjoy are Rubberneck, Maceo Parker, Cronk, and The Greyboy Allstars.

Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals - If you know Ben Harper at all, it's from his radio airplay single "Steal My Kisses".  A nice tune, but misleading as to the true style and deep lyrics of Harper.  He has the genius and passion of Stevie Ray and Jimi, with a little Bob Marley and - believe it or not - Cat Stevens thrown in.

cover    Michael Hill's Blues Mob - I first listened to Michael Hill way back in 1992 in Greenwich Village in New York.  I was with my cousin Ben and my good friend Alex.   This guy was amazing, with some of the largest hands I have ever seen (he can span the entire guitar with one hand).

Several years ago, while listening to the blues channel on DSS, I heard an artist I really liked.  I clicked the display, and to my delight it was no other than Michael Hill.   His latest CD, New York State of Blues, is a terrific Blues CD.  If you like the blues, you won't go wrong on this one!

Found any good music lately?  I need your suggestions! E-mail me yours!

I  saw a great show (April 3, 2005) here in NYC.  The headliner was a band I discovered last year, Los Amigos Invisibles from Venezuela. They are a great mix (maybe collision is a better word) of Latin rock, fusion jazz, and modern jam-funk.  And they put on an incredible show (with the exception of a lame ONLY one-song encore)

Opening for Los Amigos Invisibles was a band called Si*Se from NYC.  This is a band that captures the essence of New York's diverse culture and "lounge" music.  The vocals are beautiful/sensual/haunting, and the talent of the musicians is beyond question.

In March 2005 I went to the first large-arena concert I have been to in 10 years (festivals don't count) to see Colombian rock superstar Juanes, performing at Madison Square Garden. It was a great experience, partly due to Juanes and partly due to the crowd: no way would you see 20,000 Gringos standing, dancing, singing and swaying to the music

Opening for Juanes was Antonio Orozco, a talented guitarist and songwriter from Spain.  His music was terrific, and I highly recommend his new album, Principio del Comienzo.
